Hamden: On July 9, 2008, students from the Academy of Kempo Martial Arts in Hamden earned their new ranks. There were children, junior adults and adults from Hamden, New Haven, North Haven and Waterbury in the belt promotion.  The test administrator, Grandmaster Brian Hanson, 9th Degree Black Belt and their instructor Shihan Frank Ciarleglio, 5th Degree Black Belt viewed the students’ Martial Arts material. “To achieve a new level at the Academy the students demonstrate their abilities and must do this with the proficiency required for their level. The students demonstrate the knowledge which they gain through their classes and have to use it in an applicable situation”, Ciarleglio said.

With each level comes a new challenge, whether it is a mental challenge or a physical challenge and it helps the students at the Academy to become more aware of themselves and others. “The students go through different scenarios during their training, which helps them to mentally understand the situation and physically be able to defend themselves. Many of these situations require a team effort with their classmates. At the Academy the students learn how to be leaders and work independently but also learn how to work with others as a team. The Martial Arts is a state of being, both mentally and physically and whether alone or with others.” Ciarleglio said.

The Academy of Kempo Martial Arts would like to congratulate these students for their achievements. Adult Ranks (adults and junior adults): Yellow Belts – Kristine Burr, Cazimir Bzdyra, and Bonnie Jean Reilly, Orange Belts - Muhammad Ali, Alex Granitto and Anthony Williams, and Purple Belt – Ben Hawkins. Junior Ranks (four years old thru ten years old): Junior Green Belt – Samantha Cozzolino and Michael Rotondo , and First Degree Junior Brown – Alfonso Mendoza.
