Hamden: On November 14, 2007 students from the Academy of Kempo Martial Arts in Hamden received their new ranks. There were children, junior adults and adults from Hamden, New Haven and Woodbridge in the belt promotion. The test administrator, Grandmaster Brian Hanson, 9th Degree Black Belt and their instructor Shihan Frank Ciarleglio, 5th Degree Black Belt viewed the students Martial Arts material. “The students must demonstrate proper technique and understanding of their techniques to be eligible for their new ranks. The children are also tested on the rules of the Academy; respect, self-control and self-discipline”, Ciarleglio said.

The tests at the Academy have been structured by Hanson as a learning tool for the students. “Grandmaster Hanson is brought in to view the students’ progress as well as share his knowledge of the Martial Arts with them. When the students leave the test they walk away with much more than a new rank they walk away with more tools to help them improve their Martial Arts abilities” said Ciarleglio. “The tools they learn are the same tools which will help them in their everyday life. The Martial Arts is not just a physical exercise, it’s a mental exercise as well. When someone slacks off in one area of their life you will usually find that it affects other areas as well, that’s why at the Academy we stress to our students that they should perform at one hundred percent one hundred percent of the time”, said Ciarleglio.

The testing procedures at the Academy evaluate the students’ strengths as well as their weaknesses. When a student finds their strengths they are encouraged to continue to strengthen them, and when they identify a weakness they then have a starting point for a new goal.

The Academy of Kempo Martial Arts would like to congratulate these students for their achievements.
