Dear Friend:

A life is lost to suicide every 16 minutes in the United States. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among fifteen to twenty-four year olds and the second leading cause of death among college students. However, most Americans remain unaware that suicide is a national health problem.  The impact suicide has on the lives of family members, friends, co-workers and the community is devastating.  The loss of human potential is enormous.

This fall, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is sponsoring Out of the Darkness walks throughout the United States.  We invite you to support our work by becoming a local business sponsor of the Hamden walk which will be held on Sunday, October 6th at Farmington Canal Trail. This unique and picturesque spot is the perfect venue for our 3rd, annual 5K walk.  To ensure our success, we need your support!

We would like to encourage local businesses to join us in this wonderful endeavor.  We are offering three levels of support and hope you find one of them comfortable.

                              * Starting Line Marker at the $350 level (6 signs)

                              * Finish Line Marker at the $250 level (4signs)

                              * Milepost Marker at the $150 level (2 signs)

Each level gives you the opportunity to sponsor an in-ground marker with your company name along the walk route.  We also invite your company to form a team and walk with us along the scenic paths at Farmington Canal Trail.  Your donation will help us raise the much needed funds for AFSP to continue its important work both locally and nationally.  Please fill out the form and mail it in.

A major goal of this event is to show support for the families and friends of the 33,000 Americans who die by suicide, and the 20 million people who suffer from depression, each year.  Support of the community walks also helps to raise funds for suicide prevention research and educational programs, erase the stigma surrounding suicide and its causes, and encourage those who are suffering from mental illness to see treatment.

Please save the date and plan to join us for this extraordinary event.  For more information about AFSP and the Out of the Darkness walk, please visit our website at: www.afsp.org .  You can register for the walk at: www.outofthedarkness.org.

Sincerely,

Suzann Kober
